Obara Akira Memorial Service

On April 16th at 5:00 PM, a special memorial service will be held at the Shanti Dharma Stupa of HBS Nepal, remembering the life and vow of a young man whose compassion became a bridge between Japan and Nepal.

This sacred ceremony will be conducted by Most Reverend Seijun Nichio Nagamatsu, Head Master of Myoshinji Temple, who personally guided and inspired Akira in his journey of faith and service.

Remembering Akira Obara — The Lion of the Himalayas

In the aftermath of the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, Akira Obara came from Japan as a volunteer—not for recognition, but out of a pure wish to help those suffering in the land where the Buddha was born.

He lived with villagers in Samundradevi, worked in the rebuilding of a destroyed school, chanted Odaimoku with children, and shared songs and smiles under the Himalayan sky.

On November 16, 2015, while engaged in this relief work, Akira tragically lost his life. He was only 25.

But his life did not end there.

His sacrifice became the spiritual seed for what is now a living movement of Buddhist revival in Nepal. The Shanti Dharma Stupa stands today as a monument not only to his memory, but to compassion in action, faith in practice, and the unbreakable bond between two nations through Dharma.

Rev. Nagamatsu was the mentor Akira deeply admired and the spiritual teacher who turned grief into vow. Through his guidance, HBS Nepal continued the mission Akira left behind—rebuilding schools, nurturing communities, and spreading the living practice of Namu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo across Nepal.

This memorial is not only a remembrance.

It is a renewal of that vow.
